I have a second hand iPhone XR. I have had it for about 3 years now. Battery is knackered, the back of it is smashed (somehow smashed while being in a cover, who knew). I need a new phone.

What phone am I going to buy? I'd buy another iPhone. Then I saw the price and thought - no. Fuck that.

So I'm going to get a Fairphone 6 instead. At least there's a promise of:

1) A de-googled experience

2) Modular so I can change the battery

3) No glass back.

So you can sign up today, load £20 in to an account, spunk it on Man Utd to win the World Cup in Thailand. If they don't win, they don't care. You can put more money in. But if you win money, they won't pay out until you provide some sort of verification.

Happy to be wrong on that, but the last time I signed up that's how it worked.

That's the same sort of argument people have regarding Wetherspoons. People argue that if it weren't for Wetherspoons the high streets would be devoid of pubs. Ignoring of course how they (or at least used to) haggle with various breweries and buy their beer right up to the end of the use by date for cheap which ended up in the pubs, which means the other pubs can't compete on price. Plus Wetherspoons would often set up shop in old banks which were/are nice old buildings, so again there is that argument they're keeping the fabric of the high street too.

And while it's true, like Frazier Group, it's one of those truths that is no less wrong or sad.

The whole reason HS2's budget ballooned like it did was all the subcontractors adding 10/20% on to the price knowing it's Government work and it'd be paid. Subsequently then sub contracting that work out to others who did the same 10/20%.

That's how the building game works, especially with infrastructure.

I work with a lad who had a God/Saviour complex. He's never wrong, he's always right, he knows best. Except he is hardly ever right, and his own prejudices stop him from looking at the problem correctly.

A month or two ago we get an email forwarded to us by our gaffer, and the email is from a Microsoft representative who is our "account manager". They wanted to set up a call to discuss our needs and wants and blah blah fucking blah. It's a sales call. It's a sales pitch. The fucker is just interested in sales, I'm already busy so I immediately say no to this meeting. Except I get pushed in to it by the gaffer along with my colleague because they feel it might be good. I know it won't be, but the lad I work with is eager to point out "This is our account manager at Microsoft so they will know whats best for us". I tell them both that the email reeks of a sales pitch and that is all it will be, because we've never had to deal direct with Microsoft so how could we really have an account manager with them?

I'm overruled.

I'm not 5 minutes in to this meeting and all of what I thought it would be was true. The representative had no real technical background other than what Microsoft has told her to sell. My colleague is going off on mad tangents asking her things she has no idea about because for every question he asks she says "I don't know personally but I will pass this on to the X expert/lead of that department and we can arrange another call to discuss that in detail".

The call, in essence, was trying to get us to shift our licenses to E5. Which is prohibitively expensive for what it provides. There was nothing of value to the call which didn't surprise me at all. When the call finished I went on a call with my colleague and he was so disappointed. He genuinely thought it would be useful and could now see - after the 45 minutes call - exactly what I told him it would be.

I can see though how bigger/larger corporations would fall in to this trap because the representative of the company either isn't cynical enough, knowledgeable enough, or has a true grasp of their own limitations to know they don't have the full picture, they aren't going to be in a position to question everything the seller is saying. They take them on face value, agree to everything, then cannot understand how the picture perfect postcard world Micro$oft offered hasn't materialised.

That is what the bin strike is stemming from. If the bin workers don't take the pay cut then the council has to pay out more over equal pay. Totally wrong on the part of the council.

As for how much money the women got, can't say. My mother was a dinner lady so got a pay out, a friend of mine's mother also got a massive pay out (£75k) which she promptly squandered buying a pub she couldn't run. My mom lost her job shortly after the pay out over council cuts stemming from the pay out.

The council is far too big to be efficient. It needs to be broken up.

I'm not sure this is 100% true with the latest version of Windows 11 Pro. I distinctly remember installing this on a laptop and wanting to create a local account but I couldn't without using one of the workarounds listed in the article. What you mentioned wasn't available.

Is it possible that your method works on an older installation of Windows 11 Pro which would then get upgraded/updated post-install?

Who are you referring to here? As I can't work out which one you're talking about. They're all the same.

And for $10 a year you can get OTP generation too.

I use Bitwarden personally but have to use 1Password at work. 1Password is alright but Bitwarden is so much better.

I think personally the threat of ransomware is what is keeping tape back ups going, for now.

Anecdotally at least, companies who use tape back ups tend to come back from the brink after a ransomware attack a lot quicker than companies who don't use it.
