As a former black convert of 30 years here in South Africa, from my reading of the cited books, and the study of the Mormon history at inception, it is the schism after Joseph Smith’s death that introduced naked doctrinal racism in the LDS church. America of the time was volatile regarding matters of race and slavery. There’s no way the LDS church was not going to be above the water regarding the historical turmoil which led to the American civil war, about which Joseph Smith had prophesied.
The Catholic Church-like reverence of church authority in the LDS church has not been helpful when less-informed and spiritually-blind leaders like Brigham Young led the church. Sadly even later, when highly intelligent church authorities like Bruce R. McConkie came up, they trotted out the same racial and doctrinal misconceptions Brigham Young had established..

When studied carefully as the writer has done, the Mormon history can be seen in another light in my view as much as there will continue to be doubts about the authenticity of the origins..

I’ve perused the Book of Mormon- about as convincing as the Quran. Ok strange theology, but a lot of people do not convert to a religion necessarily because its theology. They convert because they are looking for a sense of community and a sense of belonging. The Mormons to provide that for their members. To me, that’s why people convert to the LDS.

You didn’t mention the Mormons supposed calling to collect all the worlds genealogical information, correlate it and save it. Their free Family Search website has been a boon to many looking for genealogical info to build family trees, find lost relatives, etc.
