I am Robert Marro Jr., author of MALACHI MARTIN: In the Shadows of the Vatican. Jonas E. Alexis’s July 26, 2026 article “Unmasking Malachi Martin” is neither a fair assessment of my book nor a disciplined historical inquiry. It is a polemic whose conclusions outrun its evidence.

Alexis is free to dispute my conclusions and criticize Malachi Martin. He is not free to misrepresent my book, elevate disputed allegations into established empirical facts, or accuse me of dishonesty without objective evidence of what I knew or intended.

Alexis repeatedly calls my book a “biography.” It is not a biography. Post Hill Press and Simon & Schuster identify it as a memoir and a firsthand account based on my decade-long friendship with Malachi Martin. I never called it an “official,” definitive, or comprehensive biography.

The distinction between a biography and a memoir is decisive. A comprehensive biography ordinarily reconstructs an entire life through archives, documents, recordings, and numerous witnesses. A memoir relates the author’s experiences, observations, conversations, and conclusions. Its factual assertions remain open to challenge, but it cannot honestly be judged as a scholarly biography it never claimed to be. Alexis invents a standard for my book, faults it for failing to meet that specious standard, and then uses the supposed deficiency to attack my character.

He calls me Martin’s “protégé,” an unsupported label I did not use. I was Martin’s friend and confidant. Alexis then invokes my former CIA service with the phrase “Like a seasoned CIA officer,” as though my employment history itself suggests manipulation. That is insinuation, not evidence.

The gravest example concerns the Kaiser allegations. Alexis asks whether I knew about a purported apology by Father John Courtney Murray. He then writes: “If he did and chose to omit that fact,” the omission would indicate that I was “totally dishonest.”

A question is not proof. A hypothetical is not proof. An omission is not deliberate concealment unless knowledge and intent are clearly demonstrated, and Alexis demonstrates neither. Yet he proceeds to call me “not a serious researcher,” implies that I advance an account I do not believe, and speculates that I hope to persuade “credulous readers.” These attacks on a living author’s integrity are built not on established facts but on conjecture and mind-reading.

Readers may examine why I reached my conclusions about Martin and Mary Kaiser and present contrary evidence, evidence based on FACT, not innuendo. They may not erase the difference between an allegation and a verified fact.

Alexis states that Mary admitted an affair and describes alleged love letters as “physical evidence.” But for crucial Murray and Casey claims, his footnotes direct readers to a polemical blog or subsequent secondary accounts. His article provides no archival location, reproduction of an original document, demonstrable provenance, or direct signed statement from Mary. A footnote proves that a source made an assertion; it does not prove that the assertion is true. Repetition by later writers does not constitute independent corroboration when their accounts may derive from the same allegation.

Alexis applies an indefensible double standard. He treats hostile memoirs, recollections, and secondhand reports as decisive while dismissing my firsthand recollections because I was Martin’s friend. Friendship can be considered when weighing testimony, but hostility, marital grievance, ideological conflict, and the passage of time must also be taken into account. Friendship does not automatically disqualify a witness, any more than hostility automatically establishes credibility.

The subtitle promises proof of “Fraudulent Books,” in the plural. Alexis provides no book-by-book demonstration of knowing falsity. Disagreeing with the theology or historical interpretation in The Pilgrim does not establish fraud. Fraud requires proof of intentional deception, not emphatic disagreement.

Nor do Martin’s contacts with the American Jewish Committee prove the advertised “secret alliance” or the “anatomy of a con man.” Even if every cited contact and payment were accurate, the conclusion still would not follow automatically. Association is not conspiracy. Payment for work is not proof of fraud. Participation in Catholic-Jewish dialogue is not evidence of personal corruption.

I am particularly disturbed by Alexis’s ethnic framing. He unnecessarily emphasizes Roger Straus’s Jewish and affluent family background, states that Martin and I benefited from “major Jewish publishers,” and characterizes Catholic-Jewish attempts at reconciliation as surrender to “Jewish influence.” None of that proves an affair, a fraudulent book, or dishonesty in my memoir. It is guilt by ethnic association. Let me be unequivocal: I abhor anti-Semitism and every form of calumny directed against the Jewish faith or the Jewish people. I find such prejudice morally repugnant, grossly offensive, and wholly incompatible with my beliefs.

This does not place any organization beyond legitimate scrutiny. It means that criticism must address actual words and actions, never convert Jewish identity into evidence of guilt. When Jewish identity becomes the connective tissue linking publishers, money, theology, alleged sexual misconduct, and supposed deception, the argument has ceased to be neutral scholarship and has become anti-Jewish insinuation.

The venue makes this especially troubling. The Unz Review routinely directs its audience to Holocaust-revisionist/denial material and makes sweeping claims about collective Jewish power, including titles promoted alongside Alexis’s article. That context does not by itself disprove a factual claim. It does impose a heightened editorial responsibility not to allow ethnic suspicion to substitute for evidence.

I therefore ask The Unz Review to: correct every erroneous description of my memoir as a biography; withdraw or substantiate with objective facts the accusations concerning my honesty and motives; and clearly identify contested allegations as contested.

Readers are free to disagree with me about Malachi Martin. But they deserve accurate descriptions, authenticated evidence, and honest distinctions between fact, allegation, innuendo, and inference. Alexis’s article does not meet those standards. Until corrected, Alexis’s article should be recognized for what it is: a polemic built upon a misrepresentation, disputed sources, unsupported accusations, and ethnic insinuation.

I knew of some suicides during my own USAF years but didn’t know any of them personally, so I can’t describe with certainty their mental states at the time. Often it seems they are in deep despair and see no way out. Certain prescription drugs, given out to deal with depression, seem to have the opposite effect over time and end up making people suicidal.

I remember one guy in a supply squadron in Germany in the 1980s ran a pipe from his car’s exhaust pipe into the passenger compartment. Rumor had it that he left behind a scathing letter to the squadron commander who was indeed a real jackass. Apparently the junior NCO saw the commander as the source of so many of his problems.

Suicide deaths would not be covered in the base “newspaper,” which was really just a propaganda rag, so you’d only hear about suicides by word of mouth. We would, however, lose 4 or 5 guys each year to DUI-related auto accidents plus we’d lose a couple of fighter aircraft, and usually the pilots were killed.

I remember one incident that sure looked like murder but, after the body was found a week later, nothing more was said about the incident. The guy had a big dent in his head, his fingers had been nibbled down to the bone (his corpse was fished out of a river) and his pockets had been turned inside out, as if he had been robbed, either while still alive or after death.

Reading anyone’s history re: Macedonians esp. Wikipedia will give you all sorts of fantastic information b/c they will inevitably attempt to fit it into their wider Western-centric narratives. Whatever you may read re: the modern state does not disqualify the ancient roots of the Macedonian people and presence. The hysteria and insanity of Greeks, Serbs, Bulgarians and Albanians re: Macedonia is evidence in itself of the authenticity of the Macedonian identity.

As an aside, in late April, 2017 then Macedonian president, Ivanov visited Moscow and President Putin personally thanked him for giving Russia her alphabet (Kirilica or Cyrillic). Slavic history has a different take on Macedonia and rightly considers Macedonia / Makedonija a part of the Slavic heritage. It is the West who has attempted to recast the Macedonian heritage as “Western” via “Greece” and so aggrandize themselves of Aleksandar’s achievements. This is why “Aleksandar Makedonski”, was renamed “Aleksander the Great”, to disassociate him from the then widely hated name Makedonija, which up to that point had been associated with Slavs, Russia etc.

I never read the “serious” work of contemporaries. I read modern novels but not the work of modern “intellectuals.” It takes decades to sort out the mediocre, from the OK, to the smart, to the tiny handful of brilliant thinkers. But from what I have gleaned from that article and this article, I didn’t miss much.

Solun (Thessaloniki) was the intellectual capital of Macedonia (Makedonija), in the early 20th C. My response: You are correct that I have written two books that are sold by The Barnes Review. However, your other statements are incorrect.

I am not a Hitler apologist. I have been critical of many of Hitler’s policies, in particular his euthanasia program and his suppression of free speech in Germany.

I am also not intellectually dishonest. I document everything I write with references. It is always possible that my source references are incorrect, but I fully disclose where I get my information from.
