How to add images to your WordPress posts

When editing a post in WordPress, adding images to your WordPress posts can be done by inserting an Image block.

Opening the WordPress block inserter to add a new content block

Within the content area, click the + (Block Inserter) icon, choose/search for Image. Next, you can easily drag and drop an image, upload from a local file or Media Library, insert from URL, or generate it.

For the purpose of this tutorial, we will click Upload and choose  a local  image to the post.

Once the image is inserted, click on it to add essential image description as an Alt text. It will appear in the right-hand sidebar as a separate box where you can fill in the details.

Selecting the original aspect ratio for an image in the WordPress block editor

In the same block area, you can also manually readjust the aspect ratio, width, height, and the resolution of the added image or experiment with additional settings, such as Box Shadow, Animations, Custom CSS, and Visibility Conditions.

After that, you can specify the attachment settings from the toolbar above the selected image block:

  • Alignment – How to align the image in your content. It depends on your actual theme on how alignments will work on your site.
  • Duotone –  Stylize your image with a custom color overlay, applying a two-color filter.
  • Link – Select where to link the image to – the full-size image file, the media page automatically created for each new attachment, custom URL or simply not to link it.
  • Crop – It lets you trim the uploaded image and adjust the visible portion, without editing the original file.
  • Add caption – You can use it for writing a short descriptive line below the image.

You can now save the changes as a draft, and preview your post/page to see how everything comes together with the newly added image. Once approved, click on Publish.

How to embed videos in your posts

To add a video to your WordPress post follow these steps:

  1. Find the video you want to embed (e.g., on YouTube or Vimeo) and copy its URL.
  2. Go to your WordPress post (“Posts” > “All Posts” from the dashboard)
  3. Find the post in which you want to embed a video and click “Edit” (this will open the post editor).
  4. Select the area where you want to embed the video. Inside the block editor, click the + (Block Inserter) icon.
  5. You can either search or expand to Browse all, type “video embed” to see all the options, and select the one you need.

  6. WordPress has an auto-embed feature. When you paste the URL, WordPress automatically converts it into an embedded video. This feature supports many popular video hosting services like YouTube, Vimeo, and others.

After pasting the URL, we recommend previewing your post to ensure the video displays correctly. If it looks good, you can then publish or update your post.

If this method of embedding is not working for you, check your “Writing” and “Media” settings for auto-embeds to be enabled. Usually, WordPress should have auto-embeds enabled by default.

Important: Кeep in mind that embedding multiple videos on your WordPress posts affects your website performance. Each video adds to the page load time, so we recommend limiting the number of videos embedded on a single post/page.

How to add audio in your posts

The steps to add audio to your posts are similar:

  1. Click the + (Block Inserter) icon
  2. Select the Audio icon
  3. Choose one of the options: Upload, Media Library, or Insert from URL

Finally, there’s an option to hide Image or Embed blocks on desktop, mobile, or tablet. To do that, use the (⋮) block toolbar menu and select the Hide option.
