Miitopia is a role playing video game for the Nintendo 3DS, 2DS and Switch. Players can be one of many class of Mii characters. These include Mage, Princess, Warrior, Flower, Cleric and Vampire. The goal of the game is to defeat the Dark Lord and become the world's greatest hero. To do this, the player must defeat many monsters. They can get new powers whenever they defeat a monster. This is called "Leveling Up". Each class has its own powers. For example, if the character is a Mage, they can get spells such as Fire or Lightning.
Plot
[change | change source]Prior to the events of Miitopia, the game begins with the Dark Curse. Originally, the Dark Curse was just a normal person, who was described as sad and lonely. In the end, the character blames their loneliness on their face and casts it away, leaving behind a soul "full of malice, hatred and envy."
The Dark Curse, in its non-human form, has the ability to possess Miis and body hop. The possession of a Mii turns them into a "Dark Lord". The game never explains how the Dark Curse has these powers. Before the game begins, the Dark Curse possesses a Banana Factory worker, who becomes the Dark Lord as a result.
Then Miitopia officially begins. First, the player creates or chooses a Mii to be the protagonist, who is referred to as the hero. The protagonist walks through Greenhorne's Easin Hills and stumbles across a rock moth. The protagonist observes a pair of eyes being placed on the rock moth, which makes the animal become aggressive. In response, the protagonist runs away and gets lost. Then the protagonist "spies a nearby town", that being Greenhorne.
While in Greenhorne, the player speaks to eight residents of the town. The first person the player sees is the Carefree Guide, who the game describes as a self-proclaimed tour guide who doesn't really do a lot of guiding. The Cheery Granny runs a food stand and is described as always being in high spirits, with her smile being compared to a ray of sunshine. The player is introduced to a Sassy Child, who is described as oblivious to those around him; the game even insults him in his description, calling him a "typical brat." The mother of the Sassy Child is the Worried Mother, who is described as trying to keep her child in check, but her patience is wearing thin. The Lovey-Dovey Couple consists of a man and a woman. He doesn't really know how he feels, but he does enjoy her company. She has eyes for only him, but for how long remains uncertain. The Sarcastic Guy looks down on others, though the game notes that he has had a hard life. The Dubious Mayor, despite his flaws, is described as the most level-headed character in town.
After speaking to the townspeople and the Dubious Mayor, the Dark Lord, who is really the Dark Curse controlling a Banana Factory worker, attacks the town. The Dark Lord is interestingly referred to as "he" no matter the gender assigned to the human Mii. The Dark Lord steals the faces of the Carefree Guide, the Cheery Granny, the Sassy Child, the Lovey-Dovey Woman, and the Sarcastic Guy.
The protagonist then speaks to the Worried Mother, who gives the protagonist a Special Charm in return for the protagonist going to find her son's face.
After leaving Greenhorne Town, the protagonist stumbles across the Dark Lord, who summons the first boss of the game, the Mini Slime, and puts the Sassy Child's face on it. The Dark Lord says the protagonist can have the face back if they win the battle. The dark lord laughs then he disappears. As the Mini Slime is about to attack the protagonist, the pendant that the Worried Mother gave them glows. It reveals that it contains a divine entity that is unnamed. It provides the protagonist a selection of jobs: Warrior, Mage, Cleric, Thief, Pop Star (with male and female variants), and Chef. After the protagonist chooses their job, they fight the Mini Slime and are rigged to win the battle.
After the fight, the protagonist returns to Greenhorne and watches the Sassy Child be reunited with their face. After this, the Divine Entity asks if the protagonist will save the world and banish the foe of the Dark Lord, to which the protagonist accepts.
The protagonist then goes on a quest to save the world. This goes smoothly until they stumble across two Rock Moths, and the protagonist is overwhelmed. The Divine Entity summons a "friend to help," for whom the player chooses personalities and jobs for this new Mii. After winning the fight, the friend asks to join the protagonist on their quest, and the protagonist accepts.
The protagonist and Team Member 1 fight the second boss of the game, Butterfly "Carefree Guide" (Silver). Then Team Member 2 joins the team.
After completing Stage 3, the protagonist stumbles upon the Dark Lord for the third time. The Dark Lord says the protagonist keeps turning up like a bad penny. Then, the Dark Lord summons a ball of dark magic to presumably injure the protagonist. However, the ball of dark magic is destroyed by a teal laser. Both the protagonist and the Dark Lord are surprised. The Dark Lord asks who it is, to which the Great Sage reveals themself. The Great Sage scares the Dark Lord away, and the protagonist lets out a sigh of relief. The Great Sage asks the protagonist about their journey, to which the protagonist tells them. The Great Sage says they sense a strong power in the protagonist, then says goodbye.
After entering either the cave, Stage 4 or Stage 7 the Protagonist Confides in Team Member 2 on how 'cool' the Great Sage is.
At the end of Stage 4, 7 or the first Cave stage Team Member 3 joins the team.
