[COLLECTION] Elemental Game Design - LEVEL 1
A downloadable Collection
ELEMENTAL GAME DESIGN — LEVEL 1
Build stronger game design decisions through short, practical tomes, guided exercises, worksheets, and professional design documents.
Elemental Game Design is a hands-on learning collection for aspiring game designers, solo developers, tabletop creators, writers, artists, programmers, and multidisciplinary teams.
Instead of treating game design as theory to memorize, each tome focuses on one concrete design problem and gives you tools to analyze, test, document, and improve your own projects.
No programming knowledge or game engine is required.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN TO DO
By working through Level 1, you will learn how to:
• Translate vague creative intentions into observable design goals
• Define rules, actions, states, goals, and outcomes clearly
• Map mechanics and recurring gameplay loops
• Make actions and consequences easier to understand
• Evaluate whether player choices are genuinely meaningful
• Separate intended challenge from accidental frustration
• Analyze rewards, motivation, and learning
• Build small paper prototypes around risky assumptions
• Prepare and conduct focused playtests
• Create a practical one-page Game Design Document
HOW THE COLLECTION WORKS
Each tome is brief and focused.
Rather than overwhelming you with a large textbook, the collection divides foundational game design into individual topics that can be studied and applied separately.
Each topic includes:
• A concise illustrated tome
• A practical one-page worksheet
• A guided workbook or design document
• Engine-free exercises
• Questions for analyzing real games and personal projects
• Tools that can be reused during development
The worksheets are designed for fast analysis.
The extended workbooks help you document decisions, compare alternatives, identify weak assumptions, and prepare material that can be shared with collaborators, testers, or future versions of yourself.
INCLUDED TOMES
E01 — Game Design and Player Experience
Learn what a game designer can directly shape, what can only be influenced, and what must be discovered by observing players.
Turn broad intentions such as “make the player feel tense” into concrete conditions, predicted behavior, and evidence that can actually guide revision.
E02 — Goals, Rules, and Outcomes
Learn how goals, rules, actions, timing, resources, and consequences transform activity into structured play.
Write clearer rules, trace state changes, identify hidden assumptions, and test edge cases before adding more systems or content.
E03 — Actions, Mechanics, and Core Loops
Learn the difference between player verbs, mechanics, repeated dynamics, and core loops.
Map what happens before, during, and after an action, and identify whether repetition meaningfully changes the next decision.
E04 — Feedback, Affordances, and Readability
Learn how games communicate possible actions, accepted inputs, consequences, changing states, and next priorities.
Audit one interaction from cue to response and identify where players may misunderstand what happened or why.
E05 — Meaningful Choice and Player Agency
Learn how to evaluate decisions through relevant differences, usable information, value tension, and perceivable consequences.
Identify blind, cosmetic, dominated, or falsely promised choices and revise them without simply adding more options.
E06 — Challenge, Skill, and Difficulty
Learn to describe difficulty as a relationship between designed demands, player capabilities, available support, and context.
Separate the intended challenge from accidental barriers such as unclear information, inaccessible controls, excessive memory load, or slow recovery.
E07 — Rewards, Motivation, and Learning
Learn what rewards communicate, which behaviors they encourage, and how players may interpret them differently.
Analyze rewards beyond points and currency, including information, capability, access, expression, recognition, and relief.
E08 — The Smallest Playable Prototype
Learn how to build the smallest manual prototype capable of testing an important design assumption.
Choose the right question, remove unnecessary features, define observable evidence, and make a useful design decision without an engine.
PRACTICAL DOCUMENTS
Level 1 includes worksheets, exercises, and extended design documents connected to the subjects covered by the tomes.
These materials are made to be completed, revised, printed, reused, and adapted to different kinds of projects.
They may be applied to:
• Video games
• Tabletop role-playing games
• Board games
• Card games
• Interactive fiction
• Educational games
• Physical prototypes
• Experimental interactive systems
Examples of included tools:
• Experience observation exercises
• Rule clarity and edge-case tests
• Core-loop causality maps
• Feedback storyboards
• Meaningful-choice audits
• Challenge and accessibility analyses
• Reward and motivation reviews
• Prototype planning documents
• Playtest preparation and synthesis sheets
• One-page GDD templates
FREE STARTER TOME
E01 — Game Design and Player Experience, together with its worksheets and practical documents, is available as a permanent free download.
It functions as a complete introduction and demonstration of the collection’s teaching style.
You can read the tome, complete the exercises, inspect the document design, and decide whether the full collection fits your way of learning before purchasing anything.
