Wiktionary:Foreign word of the day/Nominations
This project handles the daily foreign language word posted on the main page. It mimics the English Word of the Day. Nominations may be in any language other than English.
Here’s a checklist for nominations:
- Is it foreign? For nomination of English words, see Word of the Day.
- Is it interesting? When non-obvious, please briefly state why you think the word you are nominating is a good candidate for FWOTD.
- Is it non-offensive? Don’t nominate if it would be embarrassing to have someone’s boss or grandmother overhear.
- It hasn’t been lauded elsewhere recently, right? We want Wiktionary to be original, not a copycat.
- Do we have an entry for it? An entry needs to be created first, or you could request it.
Before a nominated word is featured, it needs to meet certain requirements:
- Words in well-documented languages need to have at least one CFI-compliant quotation and a pronunciation section with an audio file or IPA transcription.
- Words in ancient, barely attested languages need to have at least one quotation or reference.
- Words in other languages need to meet either of the following criteria:
- A pronunciation section with audio or IPA, and either a reference from an appropriate resource or a quotation.
- Two independent quotations/references.
- Words in constructed languages should be in the mainspace and not in an appendix.[1]
- Terms currently in RFC, RFV, or RFD whose problems have not been resolved by those discussions will not be accepted.
- Entries may be required to have images of their headword available on Commons if the script they are in is not widely supported (e.g., Egyptian or Phoenician).
Ideal candidates include entries that are fairly complete, having a considerable amount of information, or words with unusual meanings, for instance:
- A word for an item or idea with which most English speakers are unfamiliar.
- A false friend, a word that an English speaker would assume to have a different meaning.
- A word with a couple of well-known definitions that have very different English translations.
- A word whose primary definition incorporates a range of somewhat varied concepts in English.
- An idiom or unusual expression, or anything else you think might be interesting.
To view terms which are ready to be scheduled, see: Wiktionary:Foreign word of the day/Nominations/Schedule
Focus weeks
[edit]Every so often, focus weeks are held in the Foreign Word of the Day. During focus weeks, we choose words or phrases with a certain theme, highlight languages with some special features, or show words that have particularly interesting or unusual properties. Proposals for focus weeks can be found at Wiktionary:Foreign word of the day/Focus weeks.

- @Vahagn Petrosyan: As those cites aren't independent, I think we'd count them as one. Could you add IPA? (Also, it would be preferable to feature this word in a script that people actually use for the language nowadays... unless it isn't attestable in any other script.) —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 07:20, 31 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Metaknowledge I am not familiar enough with Kurdish phonology to add the IPA. The word is attested in the Armenian script in the translations of the New Testament into Kurdish made by Armenians from the Armenian New Testament. See here. The translators simply transliterated the names of the objects for which the Kurds had no word. I doubt it is attested in a non-Armenian script. --Vahag (talk) 09:18, 31 October 2016 (UTC)

- @TranqyPoo Who are you, anyway? Why are you asking all these questions? Did you randomly decide one day to take care of foreign words of the day or what? Sorry, but I don't remember choosing you, nobody asked me, which is idiotic because my opinions are the only ones that matter. Ægishjálmur (talk) 23:42, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
- Not necessarily random, but here's some backstory. I'm asking these questions because I find that, before my time, terms were scheduled seemingly random and I'm working out a system where it is more systematic and lingually diverse. Also, some of these terms have been on this page for a decade and I believe it is mostly because it is hard to understand what makes them interesting. And so in these cases, I ask those who found them interesting why. My goal is to make it interesting for the audience as well (which I'm still trying to figure who our intended audience is). I would appreciate feedback and preferably on this topic. TranqyPoo [💬 | ✏️] 23:56, 23 June 2026 (UTC)
