They just make shit up. In historical terms, the term was coined by blues musician Huddie “Leadbelly” Ledbetter 80 years ago. It has been commonly used by Black people for decades. Literally the only thing that changed is that white people found out about it.

The late novelist was born a few miles from me in Lorain, in a small-town Ohio she called “neither plantation nor ghetto.” But much has changed.

northeast ohio is complicated for many reasons, but the stories they tell about this area ignores the complex experiences of racialized space and placemaking in american life. (i’m talking to you, journalists who cover electoral politics.)

this is what is meant by narrative inequality and people’s perception of ohians (and the midwest for that matter), which has largely been narrated through a white working class filter.
