Great Central Asian initiative: discussing scholarship by Central Asian authors!

This poor man was taken away after attempting to storm the White House to become the president. He's also a patient at the National center for mental health. It's unfair, why to take him if we have other crazy people in power?

The same is with Aspekov's accusations against President Japarov's alleged receiving of $10 mln for his presidential campaign in exchange to not prosecute ex president Jeenbekov. We know it is possible, but nobody can take Aspekov seriously.

I liked how one expert described the current situation around Kumtor: "We all know that the company has been striping us off for decades, but the government's claims look like complains of sexual harassment made by an experienced prostitute"...

The UK beneficial ownership register, whilst often flawed, helped show contracts given by the Turkmenistan Government went to UK firms owned by and connected to the President's nephew.

It was interesting to learn from this commission work that the damn state doesn't even have proper archives on Kumtor (!) among other things. Would be good if these officials were prosecuted. And , time to publish that book on Kumtor!

Including former president Atambaev, his Prime Minister Isakov, and many others allegedly receiving bribes from Centerra (electoral campaigns), turning a blind eye on Centerra's alleged environmental violations, and responsible for the state's failure of law enforcement.

So, MP Akylbek Japarov made his long career in politics by glorifying then defaming former presidents and gov officials. Yet, there is one good thing out of his commission work: new names emerge in relation to Kumtor saga:

In 2017, MPs adopted changes in the Water Code that allowed Kumtor an uninterrupted production despite the regulation of glaciers. Back then civil society lost the struggle as President Atambaev signed the decree. Why the parliament accuses only NOW of environmental violations?

I am not defending Kumtor, after all resource extraction in the Global South has been rarely a success in terms of providing economic prosperity for host populations. But vision among Kyrgyz decision-makers is even more ephemeral.

Would seriously implement populist promises made before elections. Kumtor is too big to fail. Except for foreign stakeholders that feared that nationalization of Kumtor was a realistic development.

That the parliament finally moved to approve the 'external management' to Kumtor is not of a surprise. MP Akyl Japarov has been active in this direction since winter. When I was talking to different stakeholders in the mining industry, nobody could believe the Kyrgyz authorities

While the country's still feverish about the events in Batken, trying to digest what just happened to the border areas, to the bilateral relations b/n KG & TG, to the region, we have to switch attention to the Kumtor saga & the gov's hasty movement to privatize state owned assets

I don't see how nationalism on both sides will help the local communities to continue living side by side as border delimitation will take time to happen

While justice is a general problem (we have seen that in 2010 ethnic clashes in KG, recent court decision in Kazakhstan, etc.), it is of primary concern how neighbors will resume their lives upon returning home. Securitization of borders will make things even more complicated
