Women often play a crucial role in peace-building in communities which have been riven with conflict, but are excluded from formal negotiations.

What’s more, the contributions they do take are not figured into the plans made by those in formal negotiations. This means that their perspectives on conflicts, and some of the best ways to forge peace, are ignored. This can have serious consequences.

The problem is so severe that the United Nations Security Council issued a Resolution - known as 1325 - to encourage countries to better include women across the security sector, particularly in peace-building.

A conference in Almaty in November 2013 brought together the OSCE’s expertise in conflict prevention, resolution and rehabilitation, with that of UN Women. We spoke to some of the participants.

The terrorist threat continues to evolve rapidly. Kidnapping for ransom has become particularly lucrative for terrorists -- and is a serious cause for concern by the OSCE. 

When dealing with such cases, authorities strive to ensure that the hostages come to no harm. On the other hand, paying ransoms or offering other concessions fuels terrorism further. 

How to deal with this dilemma? We put this to Alexander Evans, Co-ordinator of the Al Qaeda Monitoring Team at the United Nations, and Thomas Wuchte, OSCE Head on Anti-Terrorism Issues.

A roundtable discussion Afghanistan - Central Asian Perspectives on Regional Security was held on 28 May 2015 in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The debate provided a platform to discuss recent developments in and around Afghanistan and their impact on the security situation in Central Asia. Participants also exchanged ideas on national and international strategies to prevent security threats originating from Afghanistan. Organized by the OSCE Border Management Staff College it brought together leading international security experts, government officials, diplomatic missions and international organizations.
