Today, water issues remain at the center of attention, as global population increases, thus pressuring the use of water resources. Therefore water governance has and will continue to play a major factor in local, regional and global security.
The Second Preparatory Meeting of the 23rd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum will take place in Belgrade, on 11-12 May 2015, followed by a field visit on 13 May to the communities affected by the May 2014 floods in Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Plenary Sessions will focus on the following:
- 2014 flooding disaster in South Eastern Europe – Experiences and lessons learned in the context of water governance at regional level
- Sharing of experiences on water governance in the context of disaster risk reduction and water governance from different stakeholders’ perspectives
- Mainstreaming water governance in foreign and security policies and in the context of investments and development assistance
- Awareness-raising on the benefits of good water governance
- Water governance and the Sustainable Development Goals
The Economic and Environmental Forum is the main annual event in the OSCE's economic and environmental dimension. The Forum process provides a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue, by bringing together officials from the 57 OSCE participating States and 11 OSCE Partner for Co-operation countries, high-level representatives from international organizations, as well as from the civil society, the academic and the business community. Its main objective is to stimulate deeper political dialogue, and generate commitments and recommendations for concrete activities to assist countries in dealing with economic and environmental aspects of security.
The Second Preparatory Meeting will be followed by a Concluding Meeting on 14-16 September 2015 in Prague, closing this year’s Economic and Environmental Forum process.
