Carly Kind is a human rights lawyer holding the position of Director of the Ada Lovelace Institute, a research institute and deliberative body with a remit to ensure data and artificial intelligence (AI) work for people and society. Carly has worked on promoting data rights and governance for many years, and on advocating against corporate and State surveillance. She is one of the experts in the RFoM project on the impact of AI on freedom of expression. In this video, she explains how the use of AI and data collection, surveillance capitalism and State surveillance are closely intertwined, and can impact access to information and freedom of speech. The Office of the RFoM wants to draw attention to the upcoming consultation phase, which will provide all stakeholders with the opportunity to provide feedback on the project’s work, including the #SAIFE Strategy Paper. This consultation phase will enable inclusiveness and feed into expert meetings starting this autumn.

Declaration by the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Representative on Freedom of the Media, and the Organization of American States (OAS) Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression.

The work of the Representative

The Representative’s activities can be divided into two groups: observing media developments as part of an early warning function and helping participating States abide by their commitments to freedom of expression and free media. This includes efforts to ensure the safety of journalists; assist with the development of media pluralism; promote decriminalization of defamation; combat hate speech while preserving freedom of expression; provide expert opinions on media regulation and legislation; promote Internet freedom; and assist with the process of switching from analogue to digital broadcasting. The Representative also holds annual regional media conferences, bringing together journalists, representatives of civil society and government, as well as academics, to discuss current media freedom issues.
