Hi there. I'm organising an edit-a-thon at Te Papa on Sunday May 29th, focussed on adding NZ flora and fauna species to Wikipedia. It would be good to have some more experienced editors along to help any complete beginners, and I wonder if you might be interested in attending. If so, feel free to add yourself to the Wikipedia:Meetup/Wellington/2016_Edit-a-thon. It would be great to have a good turnout and show Te Papa there's an active local editing community. New Challenge for Oceania and Australia[edit]
Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! - That would be nice! I'm not exactly in a busting rush either, but I think at least it could do with some more updating. I've jotted some ideas on my todo list for example, and there might be some more ideas on the talk page. One thing I'd like opinion on (other than my own!) is whether some of the regions should have their own separate articles. Following the many articles for Australian wine regions, e.g. Barossa Valley (wine), which seem to have passed some sort of notability check, I wonder if at least Marlborough (wine) and Hawke's Bay (wine) should exist, if not all of them; there is already a Central Otago wine region article.—Jon (talk) 06:46, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

- @Ronhjones: - Hi, I am attending a workshop today with WP:NZWPAL Giantflightlessbirds (talk · contribs) where the (non-existence of any) copyright on the logo will be resolved/clarified. - Hi Jon; while you hold the copyright for that screenshot, it contains typography, text, and graphics that are copyrighted to Mahara/Catalyst. If this was a standard software product, the copyright holder would need to release that image under an open licence. Since Mahara is released under a GNU GPL, adding the GPL template to the file, plus a link to Mahara's open source page, should be enough for people to verify that you're not violating any copyright by uploading a screenshot. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 06:28, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next seven days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

It's not really a requirement, but sometimes using {{Information}} on freely licensed files like this can help organize all of the pertinent info related to the file is a nice way which makes it easier for reviewers and bots to sort through. - Hi Jonathanischoice, you can ignore this warning. I uploaded a freely licensed SVG version of Mahara's logo onto Wikimedia Commons (at File:Mahara logo.svg). Since we prefer freely licensed images over fair-use images, the original PNG logo is being replaced. The above message was automatic, and you don't need to do anything. I read this before un-drafting this article, and under the links to avoided section, the Orchestra Wellington Facebook page qualifies as "a link to an official page of the article's subject", and under official links, it also meets the given criteria, namely that "the linked content is controlled by the subject" of the article and "the linked content primarily covers the area for which the subject of the article is notable" - i.e. communications with an increasingly Facebook-bound public about Orchestra Wellington's activities, concerts, tickets, seminars etc. I'm still not sure why you removed the fair-use logo or their official site. — Jon (talk) 02:30, 25 October 2019 (UTC)

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January. Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself! September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles. October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests. November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog. Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now! Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles. Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates. Hello and welcome to the March newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since December 2019. All being well, we're planning to issue these quarterly in 2020, balancing the need to communicate widely with the avoidance of filling up talk pages. Don't forget you can unsubscribe at any time; see below. Election results: There was little changeover in the roster of Guild Coordinators, with Miniapolis stepping down with distinction as a coordinator emeritus while Jonesey95 returned as lead coordinator. The next election is scheduled for June 2020 and all Wikipedians in good standing may participate. January Drive: Thanks to everyone for the splendid work, completing 215 copy edits including 56 articles from the Requests page and 116 backlog articles from the target months of June to August 2019. At the conclusion of the drive there was a record low of 323 articles in the copy editing backlog. Of the 27 editors who signed up for the drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. February Blitz: Of the 15 editors who signed up for this one-week blitz, 13 completed at least one copy edit. A total of 32 articles were copy edited, evenly split between the twin goals of requests and the oldest articles from the copy-editing backlog. Full results are here. March Drive: Currently underway, this event is targeting requests and backlog articles from September to November 2019. As of 18 March, the backlog stands at a record low of 253 articles and is expected to drop further as the drive progresses. Awards will be given to everyone who copyedits at least one article from the backlog. Help set a new record and sign up now! Progress report: As of 18 March, GOCE copyeditors have completed 161 requests in 2020 and there was a net reduction of 385 articles from the copy-editing backlog – a 60% decrease from the beginning of the year. Well done and thank you everyone! Election reminder: It may only be March but don't forget our mid-year Election of Coordinators opens for nominations on 1 June. March Drive: Self-isolation from coronavirus may have played a hand in making this one of our most successful backlog elimination drives. The copy-editing backlog was reduced from 477 to a record low of 118 articles, a 75% reduction. The last four months of 2019 were cleared, reducing the backlog to three months. Fifty requests were also completed, and the total word count of copy-edited articles was 759,945. Of the 29 editors who signed up, 22 completed at least one copy edit. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. April Blitz: This blitz ran from 12 to 18 April with a theme of Indian military history. Of the 18 people who signed up, 14 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed a total of 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here. May Drive: This event marked the 10th anniversary of the GOCE's copy-editing drives, and set a goal of diminishing the backlog to just one month of articles, as close to zero articles as possible. We achieved the goal of eliminating all articles that had been tagged prior to the start of the drive, for the first time in our history! Progress report: as of 2 June, GOCE participants had processed 328 requests since 1 January, which puts us on pace to exceed any previous year's number of requests. As of the end of the May drive, the backlog stood at just 156 articles, all tagged in May 2020. September Drive: 67 fewer articles had copy-edit templates by this month's close. Of the 27 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and 124 articles were claimed for the drive. October Blitz: this ran from 18 to 24 October, and focused on articles tagged for copy-edit in July and August 2020, and all Requests. Of the 13 who signed up, 11 editors copy-edited at least one article. 21 articles were claimed for the blitz. November Drive: Of the 18 editors who signed up, 15 copy-edited at least one article, and together claimed 134 articles. Performing Arts Aotearoa - Wiki Project - funding received![edit]
Great news. The Wikimedia Foundation gave me the grant for the Performing Arts Aotearoa Wiki-Project. It starts on 17 May 2021 and runs for four months. Thanks for being a volunteer or endorsing it.

NZ Opera project[edit]

There are plenty of opera companies that need expanding, but we most need articles on contemporary performers, especially Māori and Pasifika. WikiProject update - Performing Arts Aotearoa[edit]
The project is now two weeks in and the profile of the project is building in the performing arts communities. Editors have created seven new articles in Wikipedia and 291 new and improved entries in Wikidata. These have been tagged in Wikidata to the project using the property p5008 ‘on focus list of Wikimedia project’ – ‘Performing Arts Aotearoa New Zealand.’
Thank you if you have made a contribution already, there will also be lots of other ways to contribute over the coming three and a half months.
The current focus is the Wellington based festival Kia Mau [1]. This weekend Saturday 5th June there is a takeover of the Wellington Meetup with an edit-a-thon focus to Wikify the festival. Kia Mau is an established festival based in Wellington celebrating and promoting “contemporary Māori, Pasifika and international Indigenous live performance experience.” For more information look at the Wellington Meetup page or the Kia Mau Wikiproject Worksheet. Over the next few days resources will be shared, including stubs and links to information. Focusing on this festival will start to address the bias in Wikipedia that means there is low content on indigenous people, plus there are many women involved. Which means you can also add them to the Women in Red projects #1day1woman, some would fit onto the year-long campaign: Women's rights, and some into the June focus Wiki Loves Pride.
Increasing content on women and indigenous people is part of the Performing Arts Aotearoa Wikiproject.
Participating in the Kia Mau editing can be in person or remotely. You can start this week, join for an hour or more on the day, and follow up afterwards also. Any improvements to Wikipedia, Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons content will make a difference.

WikiProject update - Performing Arts Aotearoa 20 June[edit]
Many thanks to all who have contributed so far. There are 28 new Wikipedia articles and over 500 new Wikidata entries. The Kia Mau Festival mini edit-a-thon happened with useful learning for me about what seems simple and what is possible. I am proud of the persistence of editors – a much improved article for Audrey Brown-Pereira for example, a new article for The Māori Sidesteps and lots of links from performance UPU to various poets. And many Wikidata entries.
You can now link to the project page through my website (http://www.lisamaule.info). Easier to remember and google-able (Wikiproject Lisa) if you want to direct other people where to look.
Things to do:
• DEEPEN CONTENT: Have a look at the new articles on the project page: User:Pakoire/Performing Arts Aotearoa - Wiki Project. Many can be expanded including with this resource: Theatre Aotearoa database https://tadb.otago.ac.nz/theatre
• LINKABLE ARTICLES: Create articles for a venue, a company or a festival. This will help facilitate biographies being linked to other articles. Suggestions on project page.
• KEEP GOING with your own area. Let me know what you are up to. See my new research google doc (linked on the project page) – feel free to comment if you need something (ask me for permission to edit)
• IMPROVE ANY ARTICLE on any performing arts topic, theatre, dance, venues – feel free to use my suggestions as a starting point and then going where it takes you. Reach out for suggestions in your area of interest, or ideas for research. I am a subject expert which helps with searching, and now have a pool of academics and others who I can ask too.

WikiProject update - Performing Arts Aotearoa 04 August[edit]

There are two more scheduled edit-a-thons as part of this project:
- Auckland on Saturday 14 August 10.30am - 4pm at the Auckland Theatre Company studio - 487 Dominion Road, Mt Eden, Auckland 1024. The focus is influential Auckland women in performing arts.
- Wellington on Saturday 21 Augusts 10.30am - 4pm at the Nola Millar Library, Te Whaea: National Dance and Drama Centre - 11 Hutchison Street, Newtown, Wellington. The focus is staff and graduates of Toi Whakaari and the New Zealand School of Dance.
Please diary and attend in person or remotely if you are able.

WIKIPEDIA
There are now 31 new Wikipedia articles reported on the project page that include 19 new biographies, 14 of these about women and six are of people of colour (three Māori people). Keep up the good work. Keep seeking out women and people of colour to celebrate through Wikipedia.
WIKIDATA
The targets specified in this project for Wikidata were exceeded within the first week of the project with the concerted efforts of two editors. A Wikidata item was created to track entries. Performing Arts Aotearoa New Zealand (Q106787482).
With claims of ethnicity the policy is to include references from a biography, interview or personal website. Ethnicity of white people is strongly encouraged to be included where this information is available. Māori is listed and then also iwi (tribe/s).
EDIT-A-THON DUNEDIN
The Ōtepoti Dunedin Edit-a-thon was a success. It was at the Hocken Library on Saturday 10 July. The coordinator Pakoire and co-host DrThneed were joined in person by seven others, which included six new editors from the performing arts community, and two people working remotely in Wellington and Christchurch.
The new editors added 27 references to Wikipedia between them and a total of 2,017 words. Comments from new editors after they had learnt the basics and started editing related to how accessible they found doing it. There was motivation amongst many in the group to continue to meet as a way of progressing the articles they are interested in. With the experienced editors overall including Wikidata the edit-a-thon added 48.1K words, 4 commons uploads, 245 references, across 53 articles including 4 new Wikipedia articles and 15 new Wikidata articles.
COI
Conflict of interest (COI) is an area of consideration for editing in performing arts, since most subject experts are also practicing arts and producers. The edit-a-thon / meetup format was useful and people worked on unrelated articles but in tandem with others who knew where to get information.
IMAGES
There is more work to do to create opportunities to upload images to Wikimedia Commons under appropriate licences, as predicted this involves a lot of education with individuals and organisations as well as motivating people to follow through.
Take some pics of a local entertainment venue and upload them. Music venues, amateur arts, town hall, converted theatre, you would be surprised what isn’t there.

The article most certainly qualifies as a Good Article except for the lack of citations. I tagged several sections where there are no citations. I also tagged a number of sentences/paragraphs where this is also the case. (I could probably have tagged many more.) I think the whole article needs to be reviewed and the appropriate citations found and added before you attempt to get it through the GA process.

WikiProject update - Performing Arts Aotearoa 19 August[edit]
A short update this time.
The project has created 74 new Wikipedia articles and improvements to many. An example is one person has been working through improving and creating notable composers of New Zealand which is a great enhancement to Wikipedia. There is a now a regular meetup happening in Ōtepoti.
The COVID19 status of New Zealand means the next workshop is fully online. Wellington Saturday 21 August
Please add yourself to the project page and dashboard of you are able to do any editing. You can join into the zoom (link below) – come to the introduction at 10.30am, pop into the ‘Tearoom’ to say hello to others and informally ask questions. You can also work by yourself (please add yourself to the dashboard for the reporting).

This change added 198 articles, spread over 97 months of backlog, to our queue. We processed all of those articles except for those from the three or four most recent months during the July backlog elimination drive (Here's a link to a "tense" discussion during the drive).
