Delphi Live! in San Jose — May 13th – 16th 2009

Image

Where: San Jose, CA, USA
When: May 13th – 16th 2009
Who: All Delphi developers, let it be Delphi Win 32, Delphi Prism or Delphi for PHP ones.

This is really exciting — a gathering of the Delphi faithful!  The Call for Papers is out, and I’ll be submitting some topics.  I know, too, that many of our engineers will be as well.  If you’ve been thinking that you’d make a great Delphi Presenter, then now is your chance!

Jim McKeeth has a podcast talking with Olaf Monien, the organizer of Delphi Live.

Should be fun, and I hope I’ll see you there.

Your place or mine?

As part of our Delphi outreach in the US and Canada, we would love to meet you and talk about all things Delphi and Embarcadero!

Are you a Delphi User Group in the US or Canada? (I’ve reached out to the ones I know of)

Do you have a few Delphi users in your company that would love to host us?

Do you know of a location we can use? Conference room? Library? Classroom?

What dates and times work best? Breakfast? Lunch? Evening?

Or would a Delphi Meet-up work better for you? First beer on us kind of thing in return for a business card? I’ve done a few of these in the past, and they’re typically much less formal - usually chatting over a few brews, and no PowerPoint pitches beamed on the wall.

For example - we have an office in San Francisco. We plan on trying out a lunch meeting as well as an evening meeting to see what works best. If it’s a success, who knows, maybe it’ll turn into a monthly thing.

Of course we also have Scotts Valley - we’re thinking that an evening meeting would work best here.

Send me your suggestions - and I’ll compile a list of stops we will do.

PS: Other things are happening in the rest of the world. So don’t worry, just because this is targeted at the US and Canada. :)

How do you get your software and database development product, news, and other bits?

In the Evans Data March 2008 Developer Marketing Patterns annual report one of the questions asked was “Which of the following methods of receiving product info do you like MOST?”, the results were:

  • Online newsletters – 26.5%
  • Email from the vendors – 21.0%
  • Evaluation copies sent to you unsolicited (CDs sent in the mail) – 15.2%
  • Ads in print publications – 12.0%
  • Direct snail mail from the vendors – 11.4%
  • Announcements in online forums – 7.3%
  • Presentations at trade shows – 6.4%
  • Phone calls from sales reps – 0.3%

I also get my information, product, and news flows using: RSS feeds, Blogs, Twitter, Facebook, Second Life, YouTube/Google Video and other video sites, Product announcements inside of the IDE I use every day, Google Alerts, and talking with friends.

There are so many more of the “new” alternatives to online newsletters and Email. Spam filters and volume of spam will continue to make email the least attractive way to communicate. My daughters, for example, send less and less email and use Live Journal, SMS, FaceBook, and Twitter as their communication vehicles with friends, families, schools, groups, and businesses.

Barack Obama used several Web 2.0 and social network technologies during his campaign and is now using them as U.S. President.

We’d like to hear from software and database architects, developers, and database administrators how you get your information. I’ve created a Survey Monkey survey with several choices at Click Here to take survey. You can also add additional comments about the other ways you get your product and technical information.

From vnunet.com: Top 10 IT priorities for the Obama administration

In a recent article on vnunet.com, Iain Thomson and Shaun Nichols, create their top 10 IT priorities list for the Obama adminstration.

10. Use webcasting in government business
9. Update the Digital Millennium Copyright Act
8. Create a Federal Communications Commission with power
7. Immigration - the H1B visa system needs a big expansion
6. Invest in broadband infrastructure
5. Fund university technology research programs
4. Enact laws to make sure that, where privacy is desired, it is respected.
3. Green technology development
2. Manage the new wireless spectrum
1. Net Neutrality

Do you have additional priorities to add to their list?

Bjarne Stroustrup on educating software developers

I am a huge fan of Bjarne Stroustrup.  He has made many important contributions to our world of programming programming languages, our programming world, and to Computer Science.  As a researcher, teacher, and speaker, Bjarne continues to help improve the world of software development just as our Embarcadero Developer Network strives to help software developers improve their skills, enrich their jobs, and help move the state of computer programming forward.

Last month, James Maguire, Datamation, interviewed Bjarne Stroustrup (now Texas A&M University’s Chair of the Computer Science department).  The interview focuses on educating tomorrow’s software developers. During the interview, Bjarne talks about the opportunities, challenges, and work being done to improve Computer Science education programs.

In the interview, Bjarne talks about several important themes:

  • US industry can use more "good" developers if the schools can create them.
  • Bjarne, and some other professors worry about CS programs’ overemphasis on Java
  • It will take time to determine how to update CS programs using an optimal mix of techniques and subjects
  • "every company I visit has a shortage of qualified software developers"
  • "Few students see code as anything but a disposable entity needed to complete the next project and get good grades."
  • "I don’t think everyone is cut out to be a programmer, just as not everybody is cut out to be a musician."
  • "Education should prepare people to face new challenges; that’s what makes education different from training."

Bjarne has created a first course in Computer Science that focuses on teaching students what they need to know before starting a first project to produce code for the use by others. The course "includes error handling, class design, file I/O, graphics and minimal GUI, standard library containers and algorithms."

He says "the ultimate aim is to make programming more of an engineering discipline, more mathematical or scientific; craft and art are both needed, but there ought to be a scientifically based core on which people can base their craft and art…I find it appalling that you can become a programmer with less training than it takes to become a plumber."

You can find more information on Bjarne’s FAQ page.

Bjarne’s home page at Texas A&M University.
