He is the cornerstone to one of Arizona State's most promising recruiting classes for men's basketball in years. But he'll let somebody else make promises. James Harden is at ASU to make shots. Harden, a much-decorated prospect from Los Angeles, met the collective media Wednesday at Wells Fargo Arena for the first time in a formal introduction to coach Herb Sendek's second season at ASU. ASU's chances are tough to figure, mostly because of a roster that includes eight new players. But one of those eight is Harden, a McDonald's All-American who seems to hold the key to unlocking potential the Sun Devils have never seemed to fulfill. If ASU's future has a face, Harden is it. But Harden isn't seeking recognition. Not yet, anyway. Like most freshmen, he's just trying to figure out where his next class is. Arizona REpublic

Patrick Ewing Jr. is accustomed to outrageous expectations. When you have spent a lifetime carrying around your father's Hall of Fame name, perhaps replacing the Big East player of the year doesn't seem quite so daunting. "I haven't been reading any magazine articles or anything, but I'm pretty sure everyone's going to be talking about who's going to take [Jeff Green's] spot," said Ewing, the Georgetown senior forward expected to fill the starting slot vacated by Green, an NBA lottery pick and the only key member of Georgetown's Final Four squad not returning to the Hilltop this season. Ewing: "Look, nobody's going to replace Jeff Green. He was one of the best players to ever come through this program, period. It's similar to what I've always said about my father. I'm not my dad, and I'm not Jeff. I don't want to try and become Jeff just like I don't want to try and become my father. That's unrealistic. I just want to be the best player I can be, and if it gets me to where my father was and where Jeff is now, that's great. But as long as I do the things I can do and I'm asked to do as well as I can do them, I feel like I'll be successful in my own right." Washington Times

Corey Brewer, Taurean Green, Al Horford and Joakim Noah have moved on. Jonathan Mitchell, Marreese Speights and Dan Werner have moved in. How much the second move can make up for the first is the key to Florida's upcoming men's basketball season. During the offseason, Mitchell, Speights and Werner took over the on-campus apartment that Brewer, Green, Horford and Noah had shared during their final two years at UF. It was partly a move of convenience, but also with the hopes that Mitchell, Speights and Werner would acquire some of the karma left by the cornerstones of the Gators' back-to-back NCAA championships. Mitchell picked Brewer's old room, Speights took Noah's and Werner is in Green's. Horford's old room went to swimmer Shaune Fraser. Brewer mentored Mitchell last season, and the sophomore from Mount Vernon, N.Y., wanted to feel close to the person he said was like a big brother. "I speak to him almost every day still," said Mitchell, who averaged 1.4 points and 1.2 rebounds in 30 games last season. "He just told me to work hard and never take days off, and the opportunity will be there." Times-Union

First-year Colorado men's basketball coach Jeff Bzdelik realizes that fans want to know how the Buffaloes will adapt to his Princeton-style offense with all the passing, cutting and screening involved. "Everybody makes such a big deal about it; let's just call it the 'Colorado offense,"' Bzdelik said Wednesday, two days before college programs can begin full practices. "European basketball is really what it is. But we'll just call it the Colorado offense." Denver Post

Colorado returns four starters: the 6-foot-6 Roby, 6-5 sophomore Xavier Silas, 6-9 senior Marcus King-Stockton and 6-6 senior Jermyl Jackson-Wilson. Also back is 6-2 senior Marcus Hall, a starter in 2005-06 who sat out last season to concentrate on academics. Jeremy Williams, a 6-7 sophomore forward, was a part-time starter last season but is academically ineligible this semester. Denver Post

College Basketball News: Wed, Oct. 10

Josh Shipp is all sharp angles and defined muscles. He has the shoulders of a swimmer and the legs of a weightlifter. Most important, he feels great. Shipp says he is fully recovered from surgery in April on his left hip, his second hip surgery in two years. He was all smiles Tuesday when the UCLA men's basketball team reported to Pauley Pavilion for photos, interviews and health reports. LA Times

The players wore a new basketball uniform Tuesday. In commemoration of UCLA's 100 NCAA championships, the bright white jersey had a blue "U", "L", and "A" and a light yellow "C" that represents the number 100 in roman numerals. Mata-Real thought the jersey was "ugly," several of the players admitted they hadn't known what the yellow "C" stood for, and there was a sense Howland wasn't enthusiastic about the design -- even from only a few feet away, it appeared as if the "C" was missing. Jim Calhoun knows he should not have jumped to conclusions after UConn jumped to an 11-0 start last season. "We played 11 home games, won them all and I thought we were good," Calhoun said. "Then we had to play the Big East and life changed rather quickly." The inexperienced Huskies then lost 14 of their final 20 games and missed the postseason for the first time in 20 years. UConn, Calhoun realizes, would have been better served by having tougher games before conference play. Hartford Courant

Next year, Calhoun said, UConn will play an early-season tournament in the Virgin Islands. He said he also is considering a foreign tour in the offseason, but he isn't sure whether the NCAA will allow such a trip in the same year as a Virgin Islands trip. Hartford Courant

Washington basketball players toured Greece this summer and caught a glimpse of the past, checking out ancient ruins and all sorts of centuries-old stuff. Playing five games over 11 days, they also got a good look at the future and discovered that it heavily involves Tim Morris. Seattle Post-Intelligencer

Now, Oregon has three seniors -- Bryce Taylor, Maarty Leunen and Malik Hairston -- hoping to catch the eyes of NBA scouts, and a fourth player -- sophomore Tajuan Porter -- more than eager to take on a starring role. "We'd be lying if we said it wasn't in the back of our minds, but that type of success comes from having a good year team-wise," Taylor said of a professional future. "Before last year, if somebody talked about the NBA, you didn't even hear Aaron's name mentioned." Oregonian

College Basketball News: Tue, Oct. 9

A Georgia basketball player briefly lost his eligibility this past summer but was reinstated to the team, documents obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution confirmed. Terrence Woodbury, a junior from Virginia Beach, Va., played in a summer-league basketball tournament without the permission of Georgia or the NCAA, which is a violation of NCAA bylaw 14.7.3.2. Georgia, which discovered the violation, reported it to the NCAA in late August and immediately declared Woodbury ineligible. He was reinstated a short time later. Atlanta Journal Constitution

The Providence Friars received some bad news late last week when junior guard Sharaud Curry broke his foot in a team workout at Alumni Hall. Coach Tim Welsh said yesterday that Curry was participating in a drill and driving to the basket when his foot �popped� and he fell to the floor. Curry may have had a slight stress fracture in the foot that gave way, according to Welsh. Curry is in a cast and will likely miss at least the next six weeks. Providence Journal

Devron Bostick, a 6-4 small forward at Southwestern Illinois Community College, verbally committed Friday to play basketball for the Gophers next season after a visit in September, according to Southwestern Illinois assistant coach Steve Campo. Bostick was National Junior College Athletic Association All-America last year as a freshman, after averaging 19 points and 4.6 rebounds per game. Minneapolis Star Tribune

The perception is that freshman Kevin Love, the high school player of the year, will be at UCLA for one season before declaring himself eligible for the NBA draft. He was asked whether he took out a one-year or a two-year lease on his off-campus abode. "No comment,'" he said jokingly. "That was good. I liked that � (it's) four years." The Bruins have several other players who could be eyeing an early departure, including Mbah a Moute, point guard Darren Collison and swingman Josh Shipp. Orange County Register

Collison didn't bite on the question either. "I can't buy into that," he said. "I don't need to think about it. Personally, we've got so much going for us this year as a team, I just feel like if someone were to think about something other than this season it would be a distraction." Orange County Register

As Ramel Bradley and Joe Crawford -- the Wildcats' only seniors -- prepare for the start of their final season, they're doing it surrounded by new faces, including the main man on the sideline. On Friday, UK will open practice with Big Blue Madness, the de facto start of Billy Gillispie's reign as coach. For Bradley and Crawford, that means changing habits and breaking routines they followed for three years under Tubby Smith, who left last spring to take the coaching job at Minnesota. The addition of Love helps offset the departure of all-American guard Arron Afflalo, who left after his junior season and was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the NBA Draft. Afflalo was UCLA's leading scorer and top perimeter defender last year, but the Bruins still return four starters and 75 percent of their scoring to a roster more versatile than any Ben Howland has coached. If Howland wants to outslug teams, he can play Love alongside 6-foot-9 Lorenzo Mata-Real down low, with 6-foot-8 rebounding machine Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and 220-pound Josh Shipp at the wings. Not only is UCLA ranked No. 1 in a handful of preseason magazines, but students also are flagging players down on campus to ask if this is the year they finally bring a national title back to Westwood. Press-Enterprise

Kansas forwards Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur both were named to the preseason All-Big 12 team, and Kansas State freshman Michael Beasley was named the conference's preseason freshman of the year, the conference announced Tuesday. "We have multiple guys who deserve preseason All-Big 12 recognition and I think it's great that we had a couple of guys land on the team with Brandon and Darrell," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "I also think Mario, Sherron, Sasha (Kaun), Darnell (Jackson) and Russell (Robinson) are worth mentioning too, because I think we will be a balanced team." Capital-Journal

Joining Rush and Arthur on the preseason all-conference team were Baylor guard Curtis Jerrells, Nebraska foward Aleks Maric, Texas guard D.J. Augsustin and Texas A&M; forward Joseph Jones. Augustin also was named the preseason Big 12 player of the year. DeMarre Carroll of Missouri, a transfer from Vanderbilt, was named preseason newcomer of the year. Capital-Journal

College Basketball News: Thu, Oct. 4

UCLA basketball Coach Ben Howland, who has led the Bruins to consecutive Final Four appearances, agreed to a seven-year contract that will carry through the 2013-14 season. His base salary this year will be $1.5 million and rise to $2 million over the course of the deal, according to a statement from UCLA Athletic Director Dan Guerrero. He could make another $235,000 annually in incentives. LA Times

Florida's Billy Donovan -- who flirted with both Kentucky and the NBA's Orlando Magic -- came away with a new deal paying him $3.5 million a year for the next six years. Michigan reportedly signed former West Virginia coach John Beilein to a six-year contract last spring that includes a $1.3-million salary each year plus unstated bonuses. LA Times

No University of Maryland scholarship men's basketball player who enrolled between 1997 and 2000 graduated within six years, according to NCAA graduation rates that were released yesterday. Perhaps the most glaring figure in the NCAA's data was the zero percent graduation rate for Maryland's men's basketball team, which ranked last among the nation's 321 Division I programs. The second-worst program from a power conference was Iowa State, which ranked 315th with a 17 percent rate. Only one other men's basketball program in the ACC -- Clemson (31 percent) -- had a rate of less than 40 percent. Washington Post

NCAA officials say their three-year-old formula, which they call the Graduation Success Rate, is more accurate than federal graduation rates because the NCAA's methodology accounts for all scholarship student-athletes, including those who transfer into a school from four- and two-year colleges. Maryland men's basketball team also had a zero-percent federal graduation rate. NCAA President Myles Brand was unaware of specific details in Maryland's case but said rates of less than 20 percent are "red flags." Washington Post

"Danny Miller graduated from Notre Dame," Williams said. "Tahj Holden graduated from the University of Maryland this summer and Matt Slaninka graduated from Shepherd. That's three out of 10. You can say they didn't graduate in that six-year window but whatever." Maryland's rate fell from 18 percent last year. The Terrapins ranked last in the ACC, with only three other schools (Georgia Tech, N.C. State and Clemson) below the national average of 63.6 percent. Washington Times

"Juan Dixon is [making] around $3 million," Williams said. "Steve Blake just signed for $4 million a year for three years. Drew Nicholas is making $900,000 playing over in Spain this year. Chris Wilcox is in his third year of making $6.5 million a year. Are these people failures?" Washington Times

The Morris twins of Philadelphia will make an official basketball recruiting visit to Kansas University for Late Night in the Phog, Oct. 12 in Allen Fieldhouse. Marcus Morris, 6-foot-7, 215 pounds, and his brother, Markieff, 6-8, 225, also have scheduled a visit to Villanova for the Wildcats� Hoops Mania event Oct. 26. Lawrence Journal World

The two told the West Herald News of Paterson, N.J., that they have eliminated LaSalle, Rutgers and West Virginia. They indicated St.John�s was the only other school on their current list. Lawrence Journal World

Tulane may have lost a football game last weekend, but the Green Wave gained a basketball recruit. Kendall Timmons, a 6-foot-5 guard from Southwest High School in Fort Worth, Texas, committed after making his official visit and attending the Green Wave's 34-9 loss to LSU. "I really liked what I saw there," Timmons said. "I also liked Coach (Dave) Dickerson and his staff. New Orleans Times-Picayune

Timmons averaged 18.2 points, 7.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 2.8 steals last season, winning District 7-4A Player of the Year honors. He was selected second-team all-area by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. New Orleans Times-Picayune

He also was heavily recruited by Texas State, Sam Houston and Oral Roberts. New Orleans Times-Picayune

Tennessee men's basketball player Ramar Smith suffered minor injuries in a one-vehicle accident early Sunday morning and was released from a Knoxville-area hospital later that day, according to UT Spokeswoman Tiffany Carpenter. The accident set off a series of dramatic events. Tennessean

Smith had borrowed the car from teammate Wayne Chism without Chism's knowledge, and according to Carpenter, Smith called a friend to take him to a hospital after the accident without informing police. Tennessean

The Arkansas Razorback basketball team will hold open tryouts for walk-ons this fall, but anyone interested must attend a meeting Thursday morning. WholeHogSports

The change new Coach Billy Gillispie brings to Kentucky basketball will begin in the pre-season. For the first time in memory, there will not be a Blue-White Scrimmage. UK spokesman Scott Stricklin said the Oct. 31 date for the first exhibition game contributed to the decision to use all available time for practice. Joe B. Hall, whose UK coaching career began as an assistant in 1965 and ended after 13 seasons as Adolph Rupp's successor in 1985, could not remember the last time the program did not hold a public scrimmage in the pre-season. Jay Wright will once again tap into Villanova's basketball history to complete his coaching staff. A source told the Daily News that Wright will name former Villanova great Doug West as his assistant coach to replace Ed Pinckney, who took an assistant-coaching job with the Minnesota Timberwolves. West, the Wildcats' fourth all-time leading scorer, helped Villanova to an 80-59 record and two NCAA Tournament runs during his 4-year tenure on the Main Line (1985 to '89). Philadelphia Daily News

College Basketball News: Sun, Sept. 30

USC sophomore point guard Daniel Hackett will be sidelined at least six weeks after suffering multiple fractures of his jaw Thursday afternoon when he was struck by the elbow of teammate O.J. Mayo during a pickup game at the Galen Center. Hackett said Mayo grabbed a rebound and turned to pass before smacking Hackett on the left side of his jaw. Hackett was taken to a hospital and had surgery Friday to wire shut his jaw, which was broken in three places. LA Times

Hackett said Mayo wrote him a note of apology and has checked in with him repeatedly since the accident. "Obviously, he didn't want to do it," Hackett said. "He didn't want to hurt me. He said he was sorry about what happened and told me to stay strong." LA Times

College Basketball News: Sat, Sept. 29

Tennessee men's basketball Coach Bruce Pearl said Friday he was "disappointed," following reports that marijuana was found in the dorm room of standout forward Duke Crews this week. Crews, who was selected to the 2007 Southeastern Conference All-Freshmen team, was suspended indefinitely on Tuesday, a day after a dorm staffer reported finding the drugs. Tennessean

According to a report from UT police, assistant hall supervisor Bob Sterner went to Crews' dorm room after receiving a noise complaint about 8:16 p.m. "Mr. Sterner said he went to the room to address the problem and when the occupant opened the door, Mr. Sterner advised he smelled a strong odor coming from the room that he believed to be marijuana," according to the police report. Tennessean

Current men's basketball player Josh Tabb is also listed on the report, but only because he is the registered tenant of the dorm room, university officials said. Carpenter said Tabb lives in an off-campus apartment, does not reside in the dorm room and was not present at the time of the incident. Tennessean

College Basketball News: Fri, Sept. 28

Georgia's basketball team returned to the court this week, and so did junior Mike Mercer. Sort of. The Bulldogs' junior guard from Snellville, who was lost for the year to a knee injury late last season, worked on the side with a trainer as the rest of the players went through team work in the first of their once-a-week, full-squad workouts on Wednesday. Mercer jumped over cones, ran through agility drills, shot free throws and launched jump shots under the watchful eyes of team trainer Colby Pohlman. Occasionally Pohlman would scoop up a loose ball and toss it up in the air above the goal. Mercer would dutifully jump up and slam it through the basket. Atlanta Journal COnstitution

Mercer did not take a traditional approach to his rehabilitation. Instead of staying in Athens this summer and grinding it out in the training room, he decided to take the summer off. Mercer returned home to Snellville and took a job with a Duluth car dealership, where he worked as a salesman. In the meantime, he worked regularly with trainers at Advanced Physical Therapy doing exercises prescribed by the UGA medical staff. Atlanta Journal COnstitution

Eloy Vargas, a 6-10 senior center from American Heritage School in South Florida, gave Florida Coach Billy Donovan an oral commitment late Wednesday night. Vargas, a native of the Dominican Republic, chose the Gators over Pittsburgh and Louisville. He's ranked among the Top 10 seniors in the nation by rivals.com and the Top 10 senior power forwards by scout.com. Orlando Sentinel

The commitment gives UF five for the class of 2008, which arrives in June. The Gators are scheduled to have nine players returning from this year's team. That would give UF 14 scholarship players for the 2008-09 season, one more than the NCAA maximum. A player would need to transfer, leave early for the NBA draft, or otherwise drop from the program to get Florida within the rules. Orlando Sentinel

Georgetown men's basketball coach John Thompson III signed a six-year contract extension yesterday, which will keep him at the university through 2013. Thompson has rejuvenated the Georgetown program since he was hired in April 2004. Last season, he led the Hoyas to the fourth 30-win season in program history, a sweep of the Big East regular season and tournament titles, and their first Final Four since 1985. Washington Post

The announcement comes five months after Georgetown completed its most successful season in more than 20 years. Thompson's Hoyas won the Big East regular season and the conference tournament title en route to the program's first appearance in the Final Four since 1985. In his three seasons at Georgetown, Thompson helped restore prominence to the program his Hall of Fame father built into a national power in the 1980s. Thompson took over a team that finished 13-15 under Craig Esherick in 2004 and coached it to the NIT (19-13) in 2005, the NCAA Sweet 16 (23-10) in 2006 and a 30-7 record and the Final Four last season. The Hoyas also got some bad news yesterday. Freshman guard Chris Wright, a three-time All-Met at St. John's, broke his right foot while playing in a pickup game and will miss the early part of the season. Georgetown's opening game is on Nov. 10 against William & Mary. Washington Post

College Basketball News: Thu, Sept. 27

University of Memphis basketball players Jeff Robinson and Shawn Taggart had their court cases delayed again Thursday as their attorney, Leslie Ballin, and Shelby County prosecutors failed to reach resolution on whether the matter can be settled without a trial. Taggart, a sophomore power forward from Richmond, Va., is facing misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and inciting a riot for his role in a Sept. 2 incident outside the Plush nightclub on Beale Street. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Tennessee men's basketball player Duke Crews has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules, UT Coach Bruce Pearl announced late Wednesday. Crews, a 6-7 small forward, started 18 games last season and was named to the Southeastern Conference All-Freshman Team by the league's coaches. Tennessean

"Duke is a very intelligent student-athlete but has made some poor decisions," Pearl said in a statement. "It is in his, as well as the team's, best interest that he is suspended at this time." UT did not release the reason for the suspension. Messages left for Pearl on his cell phone Wednesday evening were not returned. Tennessean

Crews, one of the nation's top prep recruits in 2005, attended Bethel High School in Hampton, Va., the same as Allen Iverson. Tennessean

Of course, if the University of Memphis' new partnership with the Chinese Basketball Association goes as well as John Calipari hopes, his cross-cultural knowledge will only expand over the next few years. On Wednesday, Calipari and provost Dr. Ralph Faudree recounted their recent trip to China, where last week they announced a five-year agreement that could represent a breakthrough in basketball relations between the two countries. Though the centerpiece, for now, is a coaches' exchange program -- which will begin next month when 15 Chinese coaches observe 10 days worth of Memphis practices -- the long-term ramifications could reach much further. A byproduct, of course, is that Memphis would clearly have the inside track should the Chinese government ever desire to send one or more of their top young players to an American college. Though Calipari wasn't sure how far away that possibility might be, he said there seemed to be an openness to new ways to develop Chinese players. Memphis Commercial Appeal

Central Arkansas, Alabama A&M; and Gardner-Webb will visit Lexington's Rupp Arena for the regional round of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. The University of Kentucky will serve as a host for regional games, which will be played Nov. 6-7. UK will play Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 on ESPNU. Alabama A&M; will play Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. that day, and the winners will meet at 9 p.m. Nov. 7 in Rupp on ESPNU. The winner of the Nov. 7 game will advance to Madison Square Garden for the championship round Nov. 15-16. Memphis, Connecticut and Oklahoma also will serve as regional hosts. Courier-Journal

College Basketball News: Wed, Sept. 26

Washington freshman guard Venoy Overton was declared academically eligible Tuesday and cleared to enroll in school and officially join the team. Overton's status was in doubt while his transcripts, including some online summer-school courses, were reviewed by the NCAA Clearinghouse. With school starting today at UW, Huskies coaches were hopeful of a resolution this week and got it Tuesday afternoon. Seattle Times

The news about Overton answers the last question about UW's roster. The Huskies will have a full complement of 13 scholarship players, including all four players who signed letters of intent last year. The other incoming freshmen are center Matthew Bryan-Amaning, forward Darnell Gant and swingman Justin Holiday. Seattle Times

Overton, who attended Franklin High School in Seattle, was the only member of coach Lorenzo Romar�s incoming freshman class whose academic status was in doubt. Other incoming recruits are forwards Matthew Bryan-Amaning of Surrey, England; Darnell Gant of Los Angeles, and Justin Holiday of Chatsworth, Calif. Romar also announced Tuesday that sophomore guard Adrian Oliver will undergo surgery today to fix a broken nose suffered in UW�s recent five-game tour of Greece. Oliver is expected to be ready when the Huskies open camp on Oct. 12, although he might play with a mask. Tacoma News Tribune

J�Mison Morgan, a 6-foot-10, 275-pound senior from Dallas South Oak Cliff High, made a recruiting trip to UCLA last weekend. Iowa men's basketball coach Todd Lickliter apparently likes the talent in the high school senior class in Minnesota. Or maybe it's just a coincidence that Andrew Brommer became the second Minnesota native to pick the Hawkeyes since Lickliter became the Iowa coach. Brommer, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Rosemount, Minn., made a verbal commitment to Iowa on Monday morning. He joins fellow Minnesota native Anthony Tucker, a 6-4 shooting guard from Minnetonka, who committed to Iowa in June. Iowa City Press-Citizen

Coleman described Brommer as a versatile player with a nice shooting touch. "He's a very skilled big man who can step away from the basket and knock down the three," Coleman said. "He's an excellent passer with good ball skills. He can take it off the dribble, and he has good quickness around the basket." Iowa City Press-Citizen
