TOF

Ultra-flexible firmware through the magic of Forth.

Tiny Open Firmware (TOF) for Coldfire, 68K and 8031 processors:

Introduction TOF provides:

TOF is a platform for a different kind of application. It:

  • Uses processor-independent code that can reconfigure your application at boot time or on the fly. A JIT compiler quickly converts tokenized source to native machine code.
  • Staves off obsolescence in masked ROM parts. Fast late-binding mechanism allows patches to ROM code.
  • Allows live debugging and rapid interactive development.
Software Firmware Studio -- The free, full-source development environment for TOF on CF/68K and 8051. Also Forth support for Atmel's AVR.

Vocabulary 1. Lexicon and token assignments for basic TOF with the SPIX bus.

Hardware An evaluation system that demonstrates TOF's hot-plugging, processor-independent boot capability.

Evaluation boards for 8051 derivatives and the MC68331.

Serial SPIX expansion bus and add-on modules.

Applications Some examples of how TOF can solve configuration problems:
Resources Support is free via e-mail. Custom hardware/firmware is available.

Visit the Forth Interest Group or the Open Firmware Working Group. View the ANS Forth draft standard or use my quick reference card.

Visit the hardware store.

Forth, inc. sells Forth Application Techniques which is an excellent Forth primer. Buy it and work through the problems using TOF. Their Forth Programmer's Handbook is a good Forth reference.
