That could have been the situation from day one if the US in 2022 was run by assholes who think letting dictators overrun democracies is a good thing. The US never had any obligation to help fund Ukraine's defense. It chose to do so because weakening Russia is in the national interest of the US and its (then, at least) allies in Europe, and because it was the right thing to do from a moral standpoint.
If nothing else we learned that Russia's military is a paper tiger, vastly incompetent in both equipment and tactics. But they are willing to kill and terrorize civilians to achieve their aims, and have been getting lots of material help from Iran, China and North Korea, and manpower help from a couple of their satellite countries plus North Korea. It is pretty telling that despite Russia's manpower advantage over Ukraine they're the ones who have had to seek additional manpower from elsewhere while Ukraine has fought its war using only its own people.
So even if the war ends soon the goal of weakening Russia (through their own misjudged decisions, it is entirely on them) has been accomplished. Unfortunately the goal of preserving Ukraine's territorial integrity may be beyond hope with the orange dumbfuck fully on Putin's side.
