Sony BMG Music Entertainment var resultatet af en 50/50 strategisk alliance mellem pladeselskaberne Sony Music (en del af Sony , tidligere CBS Records ) og BMG Entertainment (en del af Bertelsmann ), tidligere Ariola Eurodisc, tidligere RCA Victor , afsluttet den 5. august 2004 . _ Det er et af de fire store musikselskaber og omfatter ejerskab og distribution af pladeselskaber som Arista Records , Columbia Records , Epic Records , J Records , RCA Victor, RCA Records , Sonic Wave America og andre.
Finansanalytikere forventede, at 2.000 job ville gå tabt på grund af denne fusion, hvilket sparer Sony BMG omkring 350 millioner dollars årligt .
I 1980 var virksomheden på randen af konkurs, givet væddemål på kunstnere uden den mindste antydning af kvalitet. I 2008 meddelte Bertelsmann AG, at det ville sælge sin 50%-andel i Sony BMG til det japanske firma Sony Corporation . I oktober 2008 blev virksomheden opløst og blev omdøbt til Sony Music igen , og beholdt kataloget over de forsvundne RCA Víctor og CBS.
