In purely aesthetic terms, "Raise the Red Lantern" is breathtaking.

As gorgeous as it is, "Raise the Red Lantern" never achieves any momentum or weight.

Brand New Day is a messy but largely successful attempt at remembering what makes Spider-Man special: that his greatest battle isn’t about villains, but the balance between his humanity and his job as a superhuman. Isolation and punishment don’t need to come with that responsibility.

It’s a spectacular tale about what we see, what we hear, and how both can change what we believe and how we treat each other. By the final frame of this beautiful, immersive film, you realize it’s a plea.

The movie loses many opportunities for stronger emotional resonance — the Sonic the Hedgehog films succeed far better because of their strong focus on character relationships. Yet, while watching this movie, I was reminded of the beginning of cinema.

The resulting film offers a unique and revealing — but fundamentally incomplete — perspective on the ongoing war in Gaza.
