Rowspan in table

Hey, I'm working on a project in one of my sandboxes. In the main cast section towards the end of the first bulk of cast (in the Pretty Little Liars section), more specifically pertaining to Jessica DiLaurentis / Mary Drake, can anyone tell me why the two cells on the far right containing Andrea Parker won't merge into one. Hi, @TheDoctorWho: I was randomly posting a query above, and I noticed your question. Now I hate tables like almost nothing else, but I think it may be because you have defined

{{Sortname|Andrea|Parker|nolink=1}}

twice. I reckon there should be only one of her, try commenting out one then the other with <!-- and -->. If I'm on the right track, you may also have to fix some or all of those pesky rowspan= and colspan= thingies aargh. A browser will usually render a table row with height 0, making it invisible, if no content has to be displayed in any cells in the row. I used rowspan="2" style="height:3em" to avoid this.[1] PrimeHunter (talk) 11:14, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

I'm sorry, Antolepore, but nobody at en-wiki has any authority over it-wiki, or can intervene there. You'll need to handle this within it-wiki. It is possible that somebody at OTRS could help you, but my impression is that they will not willingly interfere in the governance of an individual Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 12:42, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

• Antolepore, this has already been explained to you multiple times on multiple projects. From the looks of it, you were blocked for adding unsourced content, and likely sent a legal threat via email, which would explain why your email access was revoked. Beyond that, the fact that you somehow managed to find media.wiki, a project which is almost entirely invisible to the vast majority of users, it further seems unlikely that this is your first account or your first block. If, as indicated above, you have attempted to add unsourced material and issued legal threats, it is no surprise that you have been blocked. If you continue to tendentiously raise this matter here (where we cannot assist) you may end up with additional loss of privileges. Please stop: no one is interested in what you claim to know about anything. deleted edit summary log

Afghan Girl (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) I recently edited an article, and my edit summary was deleted. I don't know why it was deleted, and I would like to see who did that, but I can't seem to find a log of that action. (It doesn't appear under "All public logs" for that page.) @Irn: This sort of deletion usually occurs when there is some serious policy violation like copyright issues or grossly inappropriate material. However, I would expect to see both an explanation and the ID of the Admin. who performed the deletion, somewhere in the page history. This instance seems unusual as there is no indication of either. Hopefully one of the Admins. who volunteer at the help desk will see this thread and be able to comment further. Deletion of your summary etc. does not reflect badly upon you, necessarily. Thanks! Yeah, it's a weird situation that I've never seen before. It appears that the "offensive material" was simply the IP address that made the previous edit. That makes no sense to me, and I don't understand how deleting that is in line with RevDel. @Irn: It was oversighted so administrators like me cannot see it. Oversighters have an oversight log. Wikipedia:Oversight#Policy says: "This includes hiding the IP data of editors who accidentally logged out and thus inadvertently revealed their own IP addresses, and hiding the IP data of editors without an account on request." You probably used a revert method which automatically adds the reverted username or IP address to the edit summary. Just ignore it. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:22, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, it absolutely is the case that my edit summary included the IP address. So I guess this means that the editor using that IP address asked some Oversighter to delete it, and the only log for that action would be the Oversight log of the admin who did the deletion. Is that right? That doesn't seem terribly transparent. Why wouldn't this show up in the logs for the page? Why isn't there some sort of log that just says "[Admin x] changed visibility of Username or IP address (X reason)"? -- irn (talk) 22:46, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

@Irn: It may have been an IP request for privacy but I don't know. Oversighters are a user group beyond administrators. Telling people there is a secret can cause them to search for it. A visible oversight log similar to Special:Log/delete would be a giant "Here are thousands of secret things we are trying to hide from you." That would be seen as a challenge by some people, maybe people who like to out editors or look for children who post identifying information. I guess named oversighters could also be harassed, e.g. by people who deliberately posted something bad that was oversighted. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:24, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

2 Terry Castles mixed up—-correction needed!!!

Was just alerted to fact that Wikipedia has very prominently mixed me, Terry Castle, a writer and scholar at Stanford, up with Terry Castle, the daughter of the Hammer Films director William Castle. We are both female and live in the Bay Area but are not the same person! The first thing you see for me when you search—the quick look profile—-says my father was William Castle but he was not.

Based on the error, I am getting unwanted email from people asking me about William C. —-when I have not connection with him.

Hello, the only Terry Castle I can find on Wikipedia is this one which is yourself I think. Are you looking at the results of a Google search, which often displays information in a way that implies that it comes from Wikipedia? If so, Wikipedia has no control over that aspect but there is a 'feedback' link at the bottom of the summary panel to report errors. Ping an IP

- is it possible to ping an IP account? When I try to ping with {{ping|12.34.56.789}} (not actual user) the address is redlinked and it says "User:12.34.56.789 (page does not exist)" - thanks - Epinoia (talk) 17:54, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

Can't undo edit due to blacklisted link

Brycehughes, three options. (1) If you had rollback, you could have just used it on the edit in question, since rollback isn't affected by the blacklist. Since you weren't a rollbacker, I've just given you that right. (2) Normally, an admin can delete the page and restore all the edits prior to the problematic one, although unfortunately that's not the case with California, as its 10,315 edits put the page into WP:BIGDELETE territory. (3) If the issue is with an item on the local blacklist, WP:BLACK, an admin can remove the item and then put it back when the page history is back to normal. What should I do if I realize a warning I gave to a user was a mistake?

Last year I left a {{uw-vandal2}} warning on someone's talk page after they made what I believed to be a vandalous edit. I now realize that their edit was valid and not deserving of reversion or a warning. Their edit has already been redone, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do about the invalid warning. I don't want to just leave it there, should I just remove it? Should I reply to the warning stating that it was a mistake? I know I should apologize to the user, but I don't want to do so until I've handled the warning. Not sure what to do

I found three redirect pages that seem to be inappropriate for their destination article. The three redirect pages are:

• Civil rights of the United States
• U.S. Civil Rights
• American Civil Rights

The destination article is the civil rights movement. The three redirects are too broad to redirect to a specific historical event. In the United States, the term "civil rights" has a legal meaning that applies to U.S. state governments and private individuals and prevents those entities from discriminating against individuals. I thought Civil and political rights may be a better fit, but that term seems to apply to the world and not solely to the United States. I also checked the "What links here" link to see if any country specific redirects are connected to "Civil and political rights", but there are none. I don't want to propose the three redirects for deletion, because they seem like possible future articles. I do want to remove them as redirects for their current destination article, but beyond that I'm not sure how to proceed. Mitchumch (talk) 10:52, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

@Mitchumch:Convert Civil rights of the United States into an article, then redirect the others to it. A very short stub article will suffice for now, but mark it as a stub and explain why you added it on its talk page. At a bare minimum, a sentence and link to the movement article should be there to serve the purpose the redirect serves now. Technically, you should provide at least two references to reliable sources: this should be very easy given the massive number of books on the subject. -Arch dude (talk) 14:28, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Does Openstreetmap has protection imposed similar to Wikipedia? that a specific regions or a node or a way or all nodes contained in the way to protected and can be edit by a certain of users only? Hello Anna, there were indeed some edits made in January which were outside Wikipedia's policies. They were not anonymous though. However, the inappropriate material was removed with this edit. It is still searchable in the page history though. If you are not happy about this use the contact link on the left of any page to request what is known as 'Revdel'. Unconnected to the above request. The whole article as it stood this morning was copyright violation. It was a a copy and paste from the Orange City Sporting Hall of Fame website. I've performed revision deletion going back to the point the copyright material was added, which also hides in the page history the unsourced negative material added in January. @DuaaAfifi: By and large, if it is an online version of a print newspaper then it would normally be considered acceptable if it has a reasonable hard copy circulation or is one owned or published by one of the major local news outlets (E.g. Furthermore, Wikipedia is not for publicizing your inventions; Wikipedia only covers subjects that are already published in independent reliable sources. In other words, when uninvolved parties choose to write about your invention, it might then merit an article. New page was deleted, and addition of a Bed and Breakfast hotel was deleted

Hello. I recently made a page about a local hotel that has an interesting factual history, built as a residence, then used as a hostile to home homeless and abused children, then turned into a bed and breakfast. I made it short and concise to start with and it was already deleted for no legit reason. I have nothing to do with the hotel or bed and breakfast but feel it should be on Wiki as its history and timeline of events are very interesting and factual. Hope to hear from someone soon. Thanks. @SouthernGraceBB: Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. You say that you have nothing to do with the hotel or B&B, but you use its name as your username; that usually suggests a relationship. If you do have nothing to do with the hotel, you should visit Special:GlobalRenameRequest or WP:CHUS to put in a username change request. Business names are not permitted as usernames; usernames must reflect that an individual uses the account. Looking at your edit history, I see no drafts by you that were deleted; you have edited your sandbox and that is still there, though it is not suitable for a Wikipedia article at this time. This facility will need to have been written about in independent reliable sources to merit an article, and only then if it meets the special definition of notability Wikipedia has. Your entry to the list of hotels was removed as there is not yet an article; list articles like that are not for listing every such facility in existence, only those that merit articles. 331dot (talk) 18:46, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

@SouthernGraceBB:before you spend any further time on this effort, please convince yourself that your subject is notable by our definition, not yours. See WP:N. An article about a notable subject, (almost) no matter how poorly constructed, will be retained and improved. I am adding to one wiki page about game, but I can't figure out, if I need to find good enough sources for "game story/plot", or I can write it by myself, using proper language?

while preparing to make a page, I noticed that sites with reviews have 1-2 sentences about story/plot. Can I write plot by myself, or do I need to have actual sources? @Heromanofe: I believe that for games(and films) you do not need a citation for the plot, as the plot can be confirmed by playing the game(or watching the film). 331dot (talk) 21:08, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Sub-section Policy vs Guidelines

A question for the experts on changing policy/guidelines

When there are discussions on changing aspects of the larger policy documents - such as things like deletion policy, is each change required to meet the higher level of consensus/stability for it to considered a "policy", rather than a "guideline"?

Logically one of three things should occur:

1. No Change should be accepted unless they demonstrate the higher requirements (and lack of likely exceptions) of Policy, as opposed to Guidelines;
2. If any aspect of a Policy has a "Guideline-level" paragraph added, the document should be relabelled as a Guideline
3. All non-policy level changes should be only added to a sub-page, which can have a different status added to it than the primary page.

I've not seen any example of 1 in the various discussions held (and obviously not 2). Very rarely option 3 comes up (though I think this may be somewhat coincidental - i.e. it got a subpage because that made sense, rather than a policy/guideline consideration). However, most often it seems that additions are "promoted" to policy status which they shouldn't inherently get.

I was hoping for some thoughts of others, given both a relatively short tenure and a focus in only 3 or 4 areas - is this the case? Is this the case, but it's just accepted as preferable to a split status within documents? Nosebagbear (talk) 23:00, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi! If you're asking whether you can use the information you get from interviewing someone, I'm afraid you can't use that here on Wikipedia. That's WP:ORIGINAL RESEARCH, and we never use it, not in any article. --valereee (talk) 14:40, 19 March 2019 (UTC)

That said, if you publish the interview, then the published contents can be used to cite facts in the article. You can't just go talk to someone and then use what they said in the Wikipedia article. Nolan M. - according to IMDB (which is not a completely reliable source) an episode of All That was released on 24 Dec. 1994, but it does not say when it was first aired - it may not have aired until January 21, 1995 - there was an initial episode released on 16 Apr. 1994, then the one released on 24 Dec. 1994, and others released on 7 Jan. 1995, 14 Jan. 1995, 21 Jan. 1995, 28 Jan. 1995, etc., but IMBD gives only the release dates, not the dates they were first shown - hope this helps with your research - cheers - Epinoia (talk) 01:26, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

www.billboard.com is the eighth-most cited domain with about 110 000 citations.

Hi there - I've been asked to raise this question from an OTRS contact (and given permission to do so)

I've seen people give citation counts for how many times a source is cited in Wikipedia (e.g. Daily Telegraph 10,000 times etc)

The individual was wondering how this was done, and if it could be done for Billboard.

I considered a couple of other potential forums, but since it wasn't about assessing the viability of a particular source, here seemed a good first stop. If people think elsewhere is good, happy to repost there.

Trying to upload a photo

Hood evening.

My name is Marta Sedes von Dehn, great grand-daughter of Lili Dehn who is a subject of content in Wikipedia. Neither me or any other member of the family wrote the content about Lili Dehn.

I have finally been able to remove a picture in that contact that was completely wrong for it was not her. I have been trying to upload another picture, this time a correct one, but it will not allow me to do so. Apparently, to any picture about my grandmother that I have saved in my computer, Wikipedia will not grant me permission to upload. Of course, they are not "taken with my camera" for Lili Dehn passed away in 1963, and all pictures that we have have been scanned and shared amongst family members.

So I would like to know how can I upload a picture of Lili Dehn from a file in my computer.

@Martasedes: Establishing the copyright ownership of a photo taken by a family member is a mess. It's a truly silly piece of copyright law. Wikipedia's rules are cumbersome because we try hard to follow the law, and the law does not accomodate this very well at all. I feel that if you have possession of the physical photograph, you can justify a claim that you inherited the copyright when you inherited the photograph. So, don't say you are the photographer: say instead that you own the copyright. I'm not a lawyer and Wikipedia volunteer are prohibited from giving legal advice, so take this as a personal opinion. Clearly, if there is any doubt in your mind that the photographer's heirs (if other than yourself) would object, then don't do this. If the photograph was taken professionally, this approach does not apply: the copyright belongs to the professional photograper. -Arch dude (talk) 02:32, 20 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello IP user, the problem here appears to be the pipe character | after '9300' which is causing the template to interpret the rest of the URL as a separate parameter.
