I'd like to discuss potential improvements to https://www.mediawiki.org/ (the front page itself), both regarding content and presentation, as I see several issues with the current page.

I propose to discuss this in several stages:

* Defining audiences,

* defining content per group,

* defining presentation and layout.

My main intention are improvements to allow our audiences to better find the relevant information that they are looking for.

We might not be able to make everything perfect but we can certainly try to make it better?

The next step is to decide on the content. An initial proposal and explanations of related challenges can be found under https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki/Homepage_improvements_2018#Content

It's not too different from the current content and tries to use clearer phrasing, avoids some of the current content duplication, removes a smaller number of some currently unhelpful pages and adds better information mostly for sysadmins and people who heard about MediaWiki for the very first time.

The gerrit outage caused Special:ExtensionDistributor to stop working. It works again.

Special:ExtensionDistributor on this wiki currently just says "Unable to fetch extension list!". Possibly related: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T188692

In the mean time you should be able to get copies of extensions via searching Phabricator Diffusion e.g. https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/diffusion/query/Fc8MaJ6GJOrD/#R

Can you post the page you were trying to create, and in which language?

The page exists since 21 February. I don't see what's the problem here.

But when i'm trying to rename it, or make some corrections there is a "You do not have permission to create new pages" warning(

You may need to BUGREPORT it for someone else to check what would be the problem. Please post exact steps to reproduce (if you want to rename the page, provide the exact page destination. If you are making changes, describe exactly what changes or post the contents of the page that you're tying to save but that gives error)

I'm not sure if adding all and every wiki to Sites using MediaWiki/en is relevant, unless they offer anything unique

Some colleagues and me recently worked on the code of Manual:TikiWiki Conversion and I thought I might add our work to this wiki page. Since we used Git and GitHub to do the coding (and will in the future to continue) I would like to add a link to the repository and invite everybody interested in the conversion to join in our work on GitHub. Do think it is possible to let me add the link? The present version of the page already contains external links and I think our external link adds usefulness to the page. When we set up the repo, we even inserted all history that could be found on the wiki page, but still decided to not continue working on the code as part of the page but use a more modern coding approach by using a public GitHub repo.

There's no way this could work if the full path is not provided. We should either write the full path, or find a way to tell gitiles to do a search for that filename, which doesn't seem possible. Maybe linking to phabricator instead would help?

I tried updating an external link to a page for further reading, because the current links are deprecated but i keep getting this same error, please how can i get it resolved?
