Don't Panic: A Legal Guide (in plain english) for Small Businesses & Creative Professionals (2nd Edition - 2017)

This legal guide presents material that has the potential to be overwhelming and confusing in a clear manner. This text provides a comprehensive overview of forming a business to licensing material (i.e. copyright) in a way that is easy and interesting to read. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of the many legal considerations that come up when creating your own business.

Where has this book been??? I love it! I’m a working filmmaker and film professor who went to a famous (and expensive) film school but I learned almost nothing about copyright, contracts and basic business; including licensing. This is the book I needed 15 years ago. It’s clearly written, includes easy to understand summaries and it’s completely up-to-date. The authors don’t sound like codgers behind big desks talking theory; the book has info about Kickstarter, copyright, trademark, contracting, working with investors + +. Highly recommended for any creative ESPECIALLY if you’re sharing your work online.

"Don't Panic :)" is written FOR creators and small businesses. A thorough, excellent primer on the legal Ins and Outs of starting a business or taking your creative project to the next level. From copyright to open licensing, from privacy law to independent contractors, Art and Teri at New Media Rights provide simple, bottom-line explanations of what can be an intimidating morass of legal issues. "Don't Panic :)" doesn't purport to be the definitive text book or any kind of comprehensive all-in-one solution to EVERY legal issue that can come up, but it should absolutely set you off on the right foot, so that you can, with confidence, move forward with your project. Definitely, definitely pick it up!

What's really exciting about the book is that it is written in a practical way for creative people to actually "use" the advice in the book instead of just learning general information.

The structure of the book and layout (for example, where the most important parts of each section are placed summarized in a paragraph called "The Bottom Line") make it easy to reference. Also, most sections are written in checklists and bullet points instead of dense paragraphs, so it's easy to mentally check off the parts that you don't know from the parts that might be common sense to you. Overall, it's an easy to use reference.

Very easy to understand overview of the relevant laws that affect an early start-up that plans to do anything online (which is pretty much every company). Well written!

While life is an absolute right, business is not necessarily so- and in consideration of the maze of laws that the government itself cannot fully manage- it is as imperative that a practical path for business activities be defined. Why should society as a matter of public policy have to pay for legal services as to be privy to only as many rights as we can afford to discover? That certainly is not a reflection of our nation's founding ideals, and constitutes only one of many terrifyingly colossal legal paradoxes in existence. This book addresses some of the questions that foresightful entrepreneurs should ponder, and helps to chip away at the existing legal framework which currently favors the neglectful while scaring away analytical visionaries commensurate with their allegiance to rationality and ethics.

This book is worth vastly more than is cover price and is highly recommended.

I teach legal rights to artists at an art college and I "prescribe" this book on a regular basis now. Its a good read that is basic enough for people to understand and read quickly without getting bored but it also has plenty of useful information.

Beware of kindle version! Appears to be a PDF. Pages are scaled down and unreadable on a small device. Good news is that I downloaded it on Kindle Unlimited so it was free. But still, the presentation of the material doesn't work for that form factor. Photo shown is what it looks like on my iPhone 5s.
